About The Mahogany Project, Inc.
The Mahogany Project is a Black trans-led community impact organization in Houston, TX, dedicated to establishing and upholding the safety and prosperity of TQLGB+ folks of color in the south. We envision a world where trans folx, especially Black trans women and gender-diverse people, can love, be loved, and thrive without the threat of hostility, harm, or violence.
Since 2013, 240 Trans folk have been victims of fatal violence in the United States, 76% of whom identified as Black Trans Women and 74% of whom were murdered by a family member, friend, intimate partner, or acquaintance. In November 2021, Texas was officially named the most lethal state for trans folk, surpassing all other states with Florida and Louisiana in tow. The prevalence of violence and targeting of TQLGB+ folk of color has continued to go unaddressed by mainstream media, leaving the names, lives, and legacies of these loved and valued individuals buried under racism, sexism, hatred, and ignorance.
At The Mahogany Project, we know that community is the lifeblood of social change and see intentional and unapologetic love and joy as a cornerstone of our communal strength. Founded in 2017 by Verniss McFarland III, The Mahogany Project aims to reduce social isolation, stigma, and acts of injustice in TQLGB+ communities of color. This year we have extended our impact to include a safe space for collaboration, community activism, and local advocacy campaigns.
